Mayoralty mania is still exclusive to a relatively smaller number of social media users, but it did not escape superpower Facebook's attention. Facebook Places come to existence, with the possibility of dispensing Foursquare's mayoral majesty. But Foursquare's founder Dennis Crowley is not even batting an eyelash.

“It’s difficult to build services that are supposed to scale to you know 30, 50, 100 million users right off the bat, because they got to be kind of tailored down, by definition they have to be a little bit generic to speak to that large of an audience,” Crowley said in a recoding of the Gillmor Gang.

had to undergo an image change as it got bigger, but does not come in trembling to the scene. It welcomes users in with the ideas of play and joy at its core.

And just like , play is a fundamental element in Foursquare’s figure. products are a paradox in practice–made out of masterful engineering cleverness, yet that only underlines a simple design that users can unendingly play with in their hands for hours.

“You can poo-poo how like those touchy-feely things don’t mean too much to users but I really think that’s the core and kind of the soul of the service and people identify with that,” Crowley added.

Facebook is not exactly not unrestrained but the implicit reference of Crowley to its generic persona is a fact. In two weeks’ time, the site is reportedly coming out with its next iteration. And as Foursquare succeeds in the task of making more sense out its play, and the rules of its insular game, can Foursquare really say it can be location’s Apple anytime?
