As an algorithm, uses keywords, your e-mail habit and the people you e-mail the most to select pressing messages in your inbox. Marking items as important or unimportant also teaches the new feature what type of mails you see as most urgent. Those e-mails are brought at the top of your Gmail, so you can deal with them first.
