She stood last, she took center stage. Twenty-two year old Mexicana, Jimena Navarrete, outlasted the rest in vying for the scepter and the crown when her name was called last at the Miss Universe 2010.

Broadcasting Monday on NBC, the Miss finale night presented the top 15 donning their swimsuits, and then the top 10 ramping with their evening gowns. The night grew deeper and the original 83 candidates had gone down to five: Miss , Miss Australia, Miss Jamaica, Miss Ukraine and Miss Philippines.

Only one of them is flying home with the title. from Mexico has been tall and proud, confidence radiating from beneath her skin, during the whole competition. She is proud of her roots, even posting on her Facebook fanpage: “We won, long live Mexico!” The president of her homeland did not hide his enthusiasm for what the young Mexicana earned: “Her triumph is a source of pride and satisfaction for all Mexicans, who see in her the fruits of perseverance.” Mexican President Felipe Calderon even tweeted that her triumph enhances the image of their country.

The Guadalajara native donned her sash and tiara after finally beating Miss Philippines (4th runner-up), Miss Ukraine (3rd runner-up),  Miss Australia (2nd runner-up) and Miss Jamaica (1st runner-up). Her final question: What effect is unsupervised Internet use having on today’s youth? Her answer: Internet is an “indispensable, necessary tool” and we have to make sure kids are being monitored values-wise in their usage and info-consumption. Thirty seconds and a few moments after the Q&A, she was crowned this year’s , succeeding Stefania Fernandez from Venezuela. Looks like her home country Mexico also took center stage with the Mexicana.
