Wal-Mart Will Roll Out Smaller Stores

The world's largest retail store, Wal-Mart Store Inc., will shrink their supercenters to small store formats. Will the fraction of the size of their large retail stores power up the US sales?

Stores Inc. is aggressively pushing up into urban markets with a format. The expansion, that is slated to be released next month, aims to hype up the sluggish . For the past two-years, the world’s largest retailer has been testing smaller stores, called , to focus on fresh food. However, aside from an estimation that it’s larger than a drug store but smaller than a , the exact size for a small store format has not yet been revealed. Still, Wal-Mart spokesman Steven Restivo said that the company continues to evaluate a wide range of store sizes that will put them closer to their consumers.

Wal-Mart – with its more than 4,000 stores across the country – has hit the wall as it reported its fifth quarterly decline in revenue. The retailer benefited during the recession, as shoppers tend to trade down to cheaper stores. But be that as it may, increased unemployment rate, tight credit and the discounter’s own merchandising gaffes contributed to the company’s revenue decline.

But nevertheless, Wal-Mart’s move to scour small locations in urban areas like New York City and San Francisco is deemed by real estate execs as a smart move.
