Facebook Against LGBT Cyberbullies

In light of recent tragedies involving youth who have taken their own lives as a result of gender bullying, Facebook has stepped up to go against the wrong doers. Preventing this type of tragedy from happening again is high on their list of priorities.

has teamed up with , the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (), and others to form a “Network of Support” for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender teens. The Network of Support aims to help address the issue that community faces in the cyber world. Facebook started providing six tips on how teens can protect themselves online. Included in the list are blocking bullies and reporting harassment, sticking up for others, thinking twice before posting, reaching out whenever overwhelmed, and remembering that they are not alone in their struggle. Facebook already allied with , MTV’s “A Thin Line Campaign”, Human Rights Campaign, Trevor Project, Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, and Parents, Families, Friends of Lesbians and Gays. The recent tragic event of ’s suicide pushes Facebook to initiate the Network of Support. is a Rutgers University student who committed suicide recently after being harassed for his sexual preference.
