Say Goodbye to the Sony Cassette Walkman

The device which started the concept of portable music will now lay to rest. Sony decided to quit manufacturing Casette Walkmans. It may cease its production but surely will not be forgotten.

Don’t you remember the good old days? When there are no iPods yet, MP3 players or CD players, just the plain old Cassette that we grew up with. The release of the Cassette Walkman player marked the first invention on music player.

The final breed of the Walkman was shipped to Japanese retailers last April and these units will be the last of its kind. Once these stocks are all sold, the Walkmans will say goodbye forever.

The first born Walkman which was christened as the Soundabout in the US and Stowaway in UK. It was released on the 1st of July 1979 in Japan. The debut of this device was a huge success, it sold 3,000 units in its first month. In 30 years, Sony had sold 200 million iterations all over the world.

But what made it more is that the announcement was released one day before iPod’s 9th anniversary on October 23. But more or less the Walkman’s downfall happened after CD players or Discmans were launched.

But still the Walkman is a something that is unforgettable. It gave definition to what we know now as portable music.
