As the definition of extending the unemployment benefit becomes vague, only one thing remains crystal clear. The Unemployment Insurance Extension does nothing to help the 99ers.

To clear things out, the unemployment benefits extension meant stretching the qualifying dates for various tiers. It is not about adding the number of weeks of benefits. Simply put, there is no additional help for .

There are four tiers for Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC):

Tier I is for 20 additional weeks;
Tier II is for up to 14 weeks;
Tier III is for up to 13 weeks;
Tier IV is for up to 6 weeks.

For instance, if a worker receives Tier I benefits, he can move to Tier II with this proposed extension. But without this, workers cannot switch to the next tier. These two tables from Center for Budget and Policy Priorities shows that the total number of weeks depends on the state of unemployment rate. Workers from 25 states can qualify for 99 weeks of unemployment.

Again, this extension does not add more weeks of benefits. It just keeps the above structure in place for an additional 13 months.
