Though a leaked FAQ statement said that the BlackBerry Playbook will still provide its powerful features without a BlackBerry phone, page five of the document states otherwise.

Upon announcement, it was clear that is a companion device to those who already own a smartphone. However, there was a leaked FAQ statement from Verizon saying that “the BlackBerry is a value-add to the PlayBook. If you don’t have a BlackBerry smartphone, you still get all the powerful of the PlayBook Tablet”. But it seems that it is not quite the case.

From the same FAQ statement, page five reveals which features will be natively available for BlackBerry Playbook.

Q: Will apps such as email, contacts, calendar etc. be available natively on BlackBerry PlayBook?

The BlackBerry PlayBook can be used in conjunction with a BlackBerry smartphone or it can be used on its own (i.e. standalone).

The BlackBerry Bridge feature creates a secure Bluetooth link between a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and BlackBerry smartphone allowing BlackBerry smartphone users to view and interact with the email, BBM and PIM apps on their BlackBerry smartphone using the larger BlackBerry PlayBook screen.

In addition, users can access their email via the BlackBerry PlayBook’s web browser without any need for a BlackBerry smartphone.

In a future software update for the BlackBerry PlayBook, we will also provide native , calendar, and contact apps for those customers who prefer to have these apps directly on the tablet.

With restrictions like these, BlackBerry Playbook will be unappealing to those who don’t own a BlackBerry phone. Customers planning on buying RIM’s tablet will have to tether it via BlackBerry Bridge to access like e-mail, calendars and contacts. BlackBerry Playbook will hit the North American market on April 19, with prices starting at $499.
