What can we say? OMG! We simply "Heart" them. LOL!

The of the world wide web has finally made it to Oxford.

Words “OMG,” “LOL” and the famous “HEART” symbol are the fresh new additions to the Oxford English Online. According to , the current revised more than 1,900 entries. It includes a number of new words including OMG, LOL and the “Heart” symbol. Those words are called neologisms.

You’re maybe wondering what OMG and LOL mean to OED? In cyber kingdom, these words are mere shorthands for surprise and mirth. While in the real-world:

“The intention is usually to signal an informal, gossipy mode of expression, and perhaps parody the level of unreflective enthusiasm or overstatement that can sometimes appear in online discourse, while at the same time marking oneself as an ‘insider’ au fait with the forms of expression associated with the latest technology.”

OED also revealed that these neologisms are not as neo as we think it is. The very first quotation for the definition of OMG is from a letter way back 1917. While LOL meant “little old lady” back in 1960.

The heart sign (<3) is the most interesting addition since it’s not a neologism or even a word. As OED explains:

“This update may be the first English usage to develop via the medium of T-shirts and bumper-stickers.”
