Indie Artists Achieve Mainstream Success

“I think the most apt way to describe independents at the moment is 'successful.'" –Charles Caldas, Merlin CEO
A non-profit group called Merlin conducted a study which stated that independent is reshaping the music industry. In the US, the market share for indie music are 57% greater in terms of digital copies and its success was even proven by the Grammy win of Arcade Fire and the hit charts dominance of Adele.
This trend in records sales implied that indie acts can have names of its own and grow their wealth. However, the success of a few indie musicians is still not enough to topple down the likes of Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber, who both have huge followings and paychecks.
Merlin CEO Charles Caldas have positive outlook towards the growth of indie music: “I think there is no doubt that the independent spirit is alive and well, and that their adaptability, creativity and progressive approach to the digital market is clearly reaping rewards.”
He added that “the indies are finding the peaks in that field and scaling them with increasing regularity. I think the most apt way to describe independents at the moment is ‘successful.'”
