Kaspersky Finds a Multi-purpose Rootkit Threat for Windows and Mac OS X

Kaspersky Labs warns users that a multi-purpose rootkit can bring Rogue AV or fake antivirus on Windows or Mac OS X systems.

Lab warned users about a multi-purpose rootkit that threatens 32-bit and 64-bit systems. There is also a variant that targets . Kaspersky added that the 64-bit rootkit uses a special digital signature for software developers. It is disseminated through a downloader, which installs other malware.

The rootkit prevents users to install or run an antivirus, and protects itself effectively by intercepting and monitoring system activities. This brings the PC at risk to attacks, while the downloader obtains and runs malicious software — including the or for Mac OS X. Known as Hoax.OSX.Defma.f, the is one of the emerging threats for Mac OS X which is being targeted by cyber criminals.
