A group of scientists created a prosthetic chip that serves as the first memory expansion for the brain.

After conducting a study regarding the chemical interactions that gave rats a short-term learning and memorization, from ’s , invented a with some help from a group of scientists.

By using electrodes, this prosthetic chip enhances and expands the brain abilities of rats. The chip also has the capability to store neural signals and do work as an electronic device, thus, allowing animals (rats) to learn new knowledge and keep it in the devices.

As described by Dr. Berger:

“Flip the switch on, and the rats remember. Flip it off, and the rats forget […] These integrated experimental modeling studies show for the first time that with sufficient information about the neural coding of memories, a neural prosthesis capable of real-time identification and manipulation of the encoding process can restore and even enhance cognitive mnemonic processes”.

This research has been released in papers, and is entitled as “A ”. Based on the study, the development of this new technology might be very useful for people who are suffering Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, or any other brain injuries. Currently, the group is working for another experiment, and that is to reproduce the same results in other animals — such as monkeys.
