Facebook to Launch New Music Platform Next Month

Facebook is set to release its new music platform next month, and would use Spotify, MOG and Rdio as its launching partners.

Sources have disclosed that is planning to kick off its much-awaited music service next month along with launching partners — , and .

The said platform is expected to be announced at the site’s upcoming f8 conference on September 22. Like other servers, Facebook’s new will also enable users to listen to songs within the social site. They’ve pointed out that they will not host any music or media. Instead, Facebook will be utilizing the help of its partners. Sources also unveiled that this move was made to battle with and , which both have their own music content on their servers. Facebook aims to become not only a platform for apps and games, but also for useful media content.

Aside from that, some rumors speculated that the social site’s plans are to offer the music platform to other third-party applications, rather than trying to compete with them. There are also reports claiming that Facebook might go beyond offering music services, and could use to display movies in the social site sometime.

UPDATE: “There’s nothing new to announce,” a Facebook spokesperson said. “Many of the most popular music services around the world are integrated with Facebook and we’re constantly talking to our partners about ways to improve these integrations.”
