Google Play Hits More than 15 Billion Downloads

Google Play, formerly known as the Android Market, passes 15 billion downloads, since its launch in 2008
Google Play, the download service for Android users, surpasses 15 billion downloads, since its launch in October 2008. This is compared to Apple’s App Store’s 25 billion downloads, that opened in July 2008.
Google has not revealed, how many percentage of the 15 billion downloads are games. It is also unclear how many downloads were earned after rebranding its name to Google Play from its old name, Android Market.

Google has replaced the Android Market with a cloud-based platform that consolidates its music, movies, books and apps under a new brand called “Google Play”.
This new platform unifies Google’s entertainment brands such as the Android Market, Google Music and Google eBookstore and makes it all available to a single hub. Google’s books, music and video apps will be branded as Play Books, Play Music and Play Movies respectively.
