I Heart NY: Senate Signs Law to Allow Same Sex Marriage

Written on June 26, 2011 by Rudfer Tyron

Gay couples and advocates across America celebrate the approval of the law which permits same sex marriage in NYC.

Governor Cuomo signed the bill last Friday which means the law will be valid starting July 24, 2011. This make New York the sixth and largest state to adopt the law. The decision last Friday was finale of weeks of discussion between Governor Cuomo and the GOP-controlled Senate. Initially it was unclear whether the bill could get enough votes to get into the Senate but when few other politicians joined the advocacy, the hope for the bill to be passed heightens.

The decision was considered by many, including celebrities, as a major achievement for the reason that it is the largest state and its role in the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village in 1969.

The picture of the Empire state building lighted in rainbow color went viral online last Friday in celebration of the historic vote.
