HP launches 3G mobile broadband service

Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced on Monday it will start offering pay-as-you-go 3G mobile broadband services for its business laptops as the company looks to package more services with PCs.
Similar to a prepaid cell phone, the service, called DataPass is a mobile broadband service for the new 3G-enabled HP business laptops, which were also launched the same day.
What’s different about HP’s DataPass is that it provides HP’s new line of business laptops access to 3G data networks in the U.S without requiring users to sign a monthly or yearly contract with a wireless carrier. A software in the laptop shows availability of a DataPass network at the user’s location.
The DataPass service can be purchased easily in blocks through the laptop, and users will not be required to pay any activation fee, according to HP spokesman Mike Hockey. With plans starting from as low as US$5, the service is perfect for instant access to the Internet for different durations at places like hotels and airports, where Internet access could most of the time be pricey.
The plans start at $5 for 75MB for a seven-hour period, $10 for 150MB of data over 3 days, $20 for 450MB of data over 14 days, or $30 for 1GB of data for over a month.
