With a touchscreen panel and cellular radio, the Sony PSP could have been a game console and mobile phone in one.

Sony’s Xperia Play features touchscreen and cellular antennas. But it is unknown to the many that the company also planned to add these features on the PSP — the same time they were working on the console’s camera accessory and GSP receivers.

As detailed on the diagram of a filed patent application, Sony Computer Entertainment planned to include a touchscreen panel accessory to the PSP. Users would plug the device in the console’s USB port and flip the touchscreen on top of it. The stylus could be used to give on-screen keyboard input or play games.

Sony challenges Nintendo's streak, as PSP game Final Fantasy IV Collection leads game sales list. Meanwhile, PSP console rises from the ashes to come in as close second to the 3DS.

It’s the week where Sony rises from the ashes and kicks some gaming competition butt, as Final Fantasy IV Collection dominates Japan’s weekly game sales. Meanwhile, Sony PSP rises from the plateau to come in a close 2nd to the Nintendo 3DS in the console wars.

If there’s anything this week’s game and console sales list indicate, is that Sony isn’t going down without a fight despite the Nintendo 3DS euphoria going on in Japan.

Newly released Final Fantasy IV Collection for the Sony PSP tramples on the competition in Japan’s game sales this week, banking in a whopping 104,173 units sold. Dynasty Warriors 6 for the PS3 on the other hand comes in second, while also new entry Gundam the 3D Battle for the Nintendo 3DS lands at third notch.

Despite the leaked photographs now practically scattered all over the web, there's still no sign of the PlayStation Phone or even a hint of a PSP2.

Sony’s done with their bit for the CES 2011, and from what we can pick up from the statement given by Sony President and CEO Kaz Hirai, we can only root out that there may be a possibility of a PlayStation Phone as they neither confirm nor deny its existence. No hints we’re also given if we’ll be seeing Sony launch a counter attack against Nintendo’s 3DS with a possible PSP2.

In a question and answer portion of the conference, Sony’s head of home electronics Mike Abary gives fans “no comment” on the fan-inquiries regarding the PlayStation Phone and the PSP2. So what’s up Sony? Come on now, there’s nothing embarrassing about it, just say it.

Hit the break to see what we mean as President and CEO Kaz Hirai states something that may tickle our appetite for some PlayStation phone teasers.

PlayStation Phone, Replaces the PSP?

Written on December 27, 2010 by B Waldorf

“We don’t want gamers to be asking, what’s the difference between that and a PSP. We have to come up with a message that users will understand. It would have to be a product that keeps the PlayStation’s strengths intact.” ---Kazuo Hirai, Sony

Sony’s gaming master, Kazuo Hirai, gave out hints last week about the circulating rumor around the world for quite some time now: What will come after the PlayStation Portable?

Eventhough he remained a bit tamed on the details, he said Sony has been thinking of a successor game “since the day” the PlayStation was released. The company envisioned the device to contain both touch-screen controls and conventional buttons and analog sticks that the current version has.

“The games being played on Android and Apple platforms are fundamentally different from the world of immersive games that Sony Computer Entertainment, and PlayStation, aims for,” Mr. Hirai said. The kinds of gamers who enjoy more intense games, he said, would remain Sony’s fan base.
