Wii's successor is no longer named as Project Cafe, as Nintendo announced the console as Wii U at E3 2011.

At the E3 2011 conference, Nintendo announces Project Cafe as Wii U. The Wii successor is a white console that houses a six-inch touchscreen, two thumbsticks, camera, motion sensor, face buttons and base unit. Gamers can either display games on the touchscreen with roaming mode, or to a TV with fixed mode. Nintendo also promises zero latency for this link.

In addition to this, both screens can be used simultaneously, although the touchscreen does not output in HD. However, HD is available when the controller is connected to a HD TV. As Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata stated in E3 2011:

“As an industry, what we haven’t achieved yet is a game platform that is equally satisfying for all players,’ said Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata. ‘Yet, this is exactly what we intend to create with our new home platform.”

Nintendo Slashes $50 off from Wii Price

Written on May 05, 2011 by R. Depp

The Nintendo Wii now comes cheaper, as the game console’s price drops from $199.99 to $149.99 on May 15.

Information on Wii’s price drop leaked online last month, with retailers like Best Buy, Toys R Us and Amazon already lowering the price to $169.99 two weeks ago. Wii has already sold more than 35 million in the U.S. alone, since it was launched in 2006. In 2010, however, the game console’s sales declined with the Xbox 360 coming into the market with its Kinect camera add-on.

Aside from the price drop, Nintendo has also come up with a new Wii bundle. The Wii system will be available with the Mario Kart Wii game, a Wii Wheel accessory, as well as the standard Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk controller. The new bundles are offered in both black and white. With that bargain, more people are now expected to join the Wii bandwagon.

Meanwhile, Nintendo has already announced that there is more coming for Wii, as the market should expect its successor to be introduced in 2012. It’s about time, don’t you think?

Nintendo Wii Leads December Sales; Xbox 360 Beats PS3 Thanks to Kinect

Written on January 11, 2011 by Chris Martin

Michael Pacther predicts Nintendo Wii sales have dipped but is still leading the console wars for December. Xbox 360 units have outsold PS3 once again.

According to Wedbush Securities games industry analyst, Michael Pacther, Nintendo Wii has once again dominated the holiday season in the December sales, just before the NPD group reveals their December data. He also predicted that Xbox 360 has had a better run during December than Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3). As to how much? Double, to be exact.

In a preview note, Pacther indicated that Nintendo Wii will lead with 2.6 million units sold. The figure is a 32% dip from its last performance. On the other hand, Xbox will see a 91% boost with 2.5 million units sold, whereas the PS3 sold only 1.2 million.

“We expect strong sales for the Xbox 360 due to Kinect, and we believe that Kinect console bundles sold especially well. PS3 sales should be down, as sales from Move are unlikely to offset difficult comparisons from last September’s price cut,” said Pacther. “Given competition from the other consoles and as disclosed by Nintendo, we think that the Wii had another down month. We expect Nintendo DS hardware sales to also continue to struggle until the introduction of the Nintendo 3DS in March.”

Video Game Related Sicknesses and How to Avoid Them

Written on January 02, 2011 by Chris Martin

Although we did discuss before that video games actually improve real life skills, there are some rare instances where video games, particularly third or first person games can cause or trigger sicknesses.

I remember the first time I got my first video game related sickness, it was the time when I was playing a third-person game called Shrek (I was 10 back then, okay?) on my Playstation. Thanks to the low resolution and ugly motion controls, my head hurted like hell and had to stop and close my eyes for an hour until the pain drifted away. It did for a moment, but the headache continued later at night which made me retire for the day prematurely. There goes my Final Fantasy 9 grind.

Although we did discuss before that video games actually improve real life skills, there are some instances where video games, particularly third or first person games can cause or trigger sicknesses. There was a surge one time in America where the media blamed video games as a cause for children and adult’s epilepsy and seizures.
